A bit of history…
The Galata region, which has had a vibrant social structure since the Byzantine period, has retained this feature over the centuries. It accommodated an ethnic and cultural mixture of Muslim, Greek, Frankish, Armenian and Jewish populations, as well as Europeans. The city's international port has also set the tone for this cosmopolitan setting.
The first of the embassies of France, England and Venice to settle in Père before the end of the 16th century was the French embassy, which was renovated in 1838. It can be seen that Europeans and local non-Muslim groups gathered around Istanbul shortly after the establishment of the embassies: a Latin group consisting of French and Italians arrived first, followed by Anglo-German groups consisting of English, Austrians and Germans. Among the Levantines, the majority were of Latin origin. French, British, Russian and Austrian diplomats were part of the community here. During this period, many Greeks and Armenians also settled in Pera and gathered in the vicinity of the embassies. Increasingly wealthy, these groups showed off their wealth with their homes. In addition to the monumental buildings, the first living spaces outside of traditional architecture are also visible here. In addition to functional innovations, in terms of shape, material and finishing features; Galata and Pera were the centers of stone construction that arose after the great fires that destroyed Istanbul.
